Qatar 2022: Team USA prematurely celebrate World Cup qualification

Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic said of the celebration banner that “The guys didn’t know at all what it said. It was just hand handed to them.”

The United States men’s national team unveiled a banner celebrating their qualification for the World Cup one game early after thrashing Panama 5-1 on Sunday.

Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic scored three times to help the U.S. win, while close rivals Mexico needed a late goal to win 1-0 win against struggling Honduras.

Pulisic, however, insists that unveiling the banner was an accident.

“The guys didn’t know at all what it said. It was just hand handed to them,” he explained, adding that “Once we realised – there’s no need to show that off because we still have a job to do.”

On their next game, Pulisic stated that “We honestly approach it like any other game. We will prepare exactly the same as we would if we needed a win.”

The U.S. team will almost certainly qualify unless they lose by a six-goal margin; in that case, they would go into a play-off, possibly against New Zealand.
