The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has halted its services on the Abuja-Kaduna route after bandits’ attack on a train.

The attack left many wounded, and at least one passenger was reported killed on Monday.

“Dear passengers, due to unforeseen circumstances, Train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna route have been temporarily suspended. Further communication would be given in due course,” said the NRC in a tweet on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna government said the military had rescued the Kaduna-bound train passengers trapped by terrorists Monday night.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, the government said information about the rescue mission was conveyed to security operatives.

Peoples Gazette reported bandits’ attack on the Kaduna-bound train on Monday night, during which a worker said over 1,000 passengers were aboard.

Mr Awuwan said efforts are ongoing to move injured passengers to hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Mr Aruwan said the government received multiple reports of an attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train service around the Kateri-Rijana area.

He explained that relevant agencies were contacted upon receipt of the report, and security operatives were deployed to the area to secure the passengers on board.

The commissioner added that Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who was in constant touch with the security forces, commended their prompt response.
