At least 26 persons have died after a boat capsized in the Shagari River as local divers search for survivors and recover more bodies.

Chairman of the LGA Shagari, Aliyu Dantani, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday in Sokoto, said the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

Mr Dantani explained that of the 26 recovered corpses, 21 were women while five were children, adding that a search and rescue mission was ongoing.

However, the council boss stated that the local government could not immediately ascertain the number of casualties as a search was ongoing.

He added that local divers were currently in the river to see how to either recover bodies or rescue survivors.
