Ghanaian parliament in rowdy session as opposition lawmaker emerges Speaker
Tensions flared inside Ghanaian parliament on Thursday after opposition lawmaker Alban Bagbin emerged Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin, one of the longest-serving members of the parliament, scored 137 votes for his opposition NDC group to defeat Aaron Mike Oquaye of the ruling NPP.
Members of the NPP and NDC slugged it out over who would become the next Speaker on Thursday, moments after the 7th Parliament was dismissed in like with constitutional requirements.
Some lawmakers reportedly snatched ballot boxes and made away with election materials, prompting security forces to quickly intervene based on an invitation from leaders of the parliament. Attempts by some lawmakers to drive the law enforcement again were defied.
The fallout stemmed from a debate about the number of seats the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) had in the legislature.
But Mr. Bagbin prevailed in the exercise and was subsequently sworn in. He scored 137 seats while Mr. Oquaye had 136 seats.
