Sultan of Sokoto declares Monday as Eid-el-Fitr

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abukakar III, has announced that the Muslim holiday, Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the conclusion of the fasting month of Ramadan, will be observed on Monday in Nigeria.
According to the Muslim lunar calendar, the sighting of the crescent moon determines the date of Eid.
This was announced by the National Moonsighting Committee through its Twitter handle, @moonsightingng, on Saturday.
“Assalaamu alaikum. His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto has declared Monday 2nd May as the first day of Shawwal. No positive sighting claims were received from members of the National moon sighting committee and other Emirates. The Sultanate will release an official statement shortly,” the announcement read.
Nigeria, as well as certain Gulf republics such as the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain, did not see the moon, according to reports.
