Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf has constituted a five-member committee to fast-track the reopening of boarding schools in Kano.

This is contained in a statement by Aliyu Yusuf, the director of public enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, on Monday.

The education commissioner, Umar Haruna-Doguwa, said reopening the schools became necessary considering their importance in the education system.

“The closure of the schools by the immediate past administration would be investigated with a view to find out the reasons for taking such a decision,” stated Mr Haruna-Doguwa. “The committee will come up with facts on why and how the schools were closed down at a time when more of its kind are needed to accommodate the teeming students of the state.”

The commissioner added, “It would report to the ministry the current position of the schools as per infrastructure, physical structures and their security.”

He reiterated the Kano government’s commitment to ensuring sound policies and programmes to raise education standards. 

Peoples Gazette reported that 12 out of the over 50 boarding schools in Kano were shut down to ensure students’ safety. According to the previous administration, the schools were located along borders with neighbouring states, while some were along highways where they could be easily attacked. 

The affected schools included Boarding Secondary School Ajingi, Government Girls Boarding School Sumaila; Government Girls Boarding School Jogana, Government Girls Boarding School Gezawa, Government Boys Boarding School Kafin Maiyaki, Maitama Sule Boarding School Gaya, and Government Girls Boarding School Kachako.

Others were Government Girls Boarding School Unguwan Gyartai in Kunchi, the Boys Unity School Karaye, Government Girls Arabic School in Albasu, and Government Secondary School Tudun Wada and Danzabuwa.
