Ex-Singapore national team coach Barry Whitbread dies at 77
Former Singapore national football head coach Barry Whitbread, who guided the Asian country to their first-ever international title, has died at 77.
Zak Whitbread, son of the deceased, confirmed his passing in a statement on X on Friday, stating that his father died on Wednesday.
“For those who showed such love towards my Dad, I wanted to let you know he passed away on Wednesday.
“A rare man of immense integrity, principled, positive and true to who he was. He lived for family and football, lived his dream, helped me live mine and was an incredible Dad,” he said.
The cause of Mr Whitbread’s death is unknown but he had long battled with Alzheimer’s disease. He once went missing in 2022 in the United Kingdom, prompting his son to take to social media to request for assistance in locating him.
He was later found the next morning, with his son later revealing in a social media update he had suffered no injuries but was confused.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for getting the message out there about my Dad. He was found in Huyton this morning around 3.30am. No injuries thankfully but still a bit confused and I imagine some tired legs tomorrow! Thanks again to everyone,” he stated.
Mr Whitbread began his coaching career at now-defunct Runcorn F.C. Halton in 1988 but left two years later. In 1996, he was employed as the head coach of the Singapore national team, leading them to their first ASEAN Championship crown in 1998.
Subsequently, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) released a statement mourning the passing of Mr Whitbread, noting that his contribution to football in the country would always be remembered.
“The Football Association of Singapore is deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former Singapore National Team head coach Barry Whitbread,” the FAS stated.
It added, “Barry served as head coach of the Lions from 1995 to 1998, leaving an indelible mark on Singapore football. His tenure culminated in a historic moment in 1998, when he led the team to our first international trophy at the Tiger Cup.
“His contribution to the game and to Singapore football will always be remembered and cherished. We extend our deepest condolences to Barry’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
