Kano assembly withdraws impeachment notice as deputy governor resigns

The Kano State House of Assembly has officially withdrawn its notice of impeachment against former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, following his voluntary resignation.
The decision followed a motion moved by the majority leader, Lawan Hussaini (Dala-APC), during a plenary session presided over by the speaker, Jibril Isma’il, on Tuesday in Kano.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Mr Hussaini said the house had withdrawn all charges against Mr Abduraham, adding that the matter has been laid to rest.
“We will no longer pursue these offences because our role is limited to removing an official if found guilty.
“Since he has voluntarily resigned, how can we continue? We are not the EFCC or ICPC; our mandate has been fulfilled, ” he said.
Mr Hussaini noted that the impeachment notice was issued in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
The impeachment proceedings, initiated on March 5, 2026, followed allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust during Abdulsalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, 2023-2024.
