Lagos estate agent in court over alleged N600,000 apartment fraud

A 43-year-old estate agent, Olufemi Otunba, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N600,000 under false pretence.
Mr Otunba, who resides at Olomilani Street, Oshogun, Alapere, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Donjour Perezi, alleged that Otunba committed the offences on Aug. 15, at about 2.00 p.m. in the Oshogun area of Alapere, Lagos.
He alleged that Mr Otunba unlawfully obtained N600,000 from the complainant, David Akpan, under the pretence of securing a room and parlour self-contained apartment for him.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant subsequently failed to provide the apartment or refund the money but converted it to his own use.
Mr Perezi said efforts to resolve the matter proved unsuccessful, leading Akpan to report the complaint to the police for investigation.
He said the offences contravened Sections 287(a)(b) and 314(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, A.O. Akinde, granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The court adjourned the case until October 19 for further proceedings.
