Lecturers of COE Gidan Waya begin indefinite strike
The College of Education Academic Staff Union, Gidan Waya chapter, Kaduna state, has embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the non-implementation of an improved salary structure for the tertiary institution.
A communique signed by Christopher Yerima, COEASU chairman, said the strike followed the declaration of an indefinite strike by the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna.
According to the communique, the strike action was necessitated by the Kaduna Government’s failure to implement the CONCAPSS/CONTEDISS salary structure as agreed upon.
“The Kaduna State Government has failed to honour the agreement reached with JUTIKS on August 18, 2025, despite repeated reminders and ultimatums. This failure to implement the agreed salary structure has led to a prolonged period of neglect and marginalisation of tertiary institution staff in the state,” it said.
It deplored the preferential treatment by the government in approving 100 per cent salary structures for certain categories of workers while neglecting tertiary institution staff who have been on a mutilated 80 percent salary structure for over 15 years.
“To say the least, we feel highly undervalued, and our concerns treated with levity and contempt. We can no longer afford to be placated with empty promises and half-hearted measures. It’s time for decisive action,” it stated.
It is also seeking the enforcement of a 65-year retirement age for all staff in line with regulatory guidelines.
A visit to the institution by our Reporter showed compliance with the strike directive.
