The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Lagos State branch, has called on professionals to prioritise their health and well-being to stay productive and contribute meaningfully to society.

The call was made on Saturday during the branch’s annual health walk, organised by the welfare subcommittee in Lagos.

The walk, with the theme, “Walk for Health, Walk for Your Dreams”, commenced from Ajose Adeogun St., Victoria Island, to Eko Atlantic City and back.

Speaking at the event, Ayodeji Odeleye, the Vice Chairman of NIESV Lagos State branch, said the initiative was part of efforts to promote members’ welfare and encourage them to maintain healthy lifestyles.

Mr Odeleye said the profession had lost some members, including younger professionals, adding that the health of senior members was equally important to enable the profession and society to benefit from their wealth of experience.

He said the walk was aimed at encouraging members to stay fit and healthy to enable them to keep contributing to the profession and society.

“We are encouraging them that this shouldn’t be a one-off event for them. They should keep fit, stay alive and remember that health is wealth, so that they can live long to enjoy the labour that they have exerted themselves into,” he said.

Mr Odeleye said professional bodies should pay more attention to the health and welfare of their members.

He added that periodic wellness initiatives could help members maintain healthy lifestyles and improve their overall well-being.

Also speaking, chairman of the welfare subcommittee, Olanrewaju Oladele, said the annual walk was aimed at promoting regular exercise, fostering unity among members and strengthening the institution’s engagement with the community.

Mr Oladele said the initiative provided an opportunity for members working in different firms and locations across Lagos to come together.

He said physical well-being was particularly important to estate surveyors and valuers because of the demands of their profession.

“Without good health, we can’t do anything. We can only achieve our professional responsibilities when we are in good health,” he said.

Mr Oladele said the subcommittee had also introduced other health and welfare initiatives, including access to a health maintenance organisation and partnerships with healthcare providers.

He said the partnerships were aimed at improving members’ access to healthcare services and medical tests.

Some participants at the event also stressed the importance of regular exercise and medical check-ups, particularly for busy professionals.

Olaseni Olojede said he participated in the walk because he prioritised his health and had made regular exercise part of his routine.

“Aside from working as a professional, making money and the hustling and bustling of Lagos, you also need to prioritise your health and ensure that you keep fit and healthy,” he said.

Similarly, Olufowobi Olawunmi said she made time for exercise in spite of the demands of her profession.

She said she also underwent regular medical check-ups to monitor her health and ensure that her system remained in good condition.

The event also featured health checks for participants.
