Niger: Mutinous soldiers attack airport, presidency as military restores control
In the early hours of Saturday, mutinous soldiers attacked the airport and presidency in Niger’s capital, Niamey.
The attack temporarily knocked state television and radio off the air. However, Niger’s Defence Minister, Salifou Mody, said the military had regained control.
Describing the incident as a breach of military discipline and regulations, Mody said, “The swift response of the defence and security forces enabled intervention and the gradual restoration of control over these sites.”
Niger’s ruling military council, known as the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), in a Facebook post on Saturday, called for national unity.
“Our defence and security forces are mobilised to defend the homeland. Let us remain united and stand in solidarity,” it said.
Since President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup by General Abdourahamane Tiani in 2023, Niger has been under military rule.
