The Nigerian Institute of Building has blamed incessant building collapses across Nigeria on the use of substandard materials, the employment of unqualified personnel, and disregard for approved building designs.

NIOB chair in Enugu, Gyok Luka, said this on Monday in Enugu during a press briefing to mark the 2026 Builders’ Week.

Mr Luka expressed concern about the increasing number of building collapses and structural failures reported across the country. He said such occurrences pose serious threats to lives and property and erode public confidence in the construction industry.

According to him, investigations into most cases consistently link them to poor construction management, the use of inferior materials, the absence of professional supervision, and engaging unqualified individuals in building projects.

“The institute expresses deep concern over the recurring incidents of building collapse and structural failures reported in various parts of the country,” he said. “These unfortunate occurrences continue to pose serious threats to lives, property and public confidence in the construction industry.”

The chairman reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to promoting professionalism, ethical practice and adherence to best standards in building production management. He stressed the need for stronger regulatory enforcement across all stages of building development.

Mr Luka called on government regulatory agencies to intensify monitoring, inspection and enforcement mechanisms to ensure strict compliance with the National Building Code.

He also reiterated the requirement for registered professional builders to engage in the management and supervision of construction projects.

According to him, professional builders are trained to coordinate the building production process, ensuring proper planning, quality control, cost management and adherence to regulatory standards.

Mr Luka further advocated policy reforms to strengthen institutional frameworks in the construction sector and promote accountability and professional collaboration among stakeholders.

He added that the institute also encouraged the adoption of sustainable construction practices, including energy-efficient designs, climate-responsive construction techniques and environmentally responsible building materials.

The chairman, however, reiterated the institute’s readiness to collaborate with the state government, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to promote safe, sustainable and high-quality construction practices.
