A lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Ned Nwoko and a former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has mourned Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who passed s a devastating blow to Nigeria’s democracy.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, Mr Nwoko, paid a tribute to the late Ubah in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Ubah until his death in London, United Kingdom, as confirmed by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, represented Anambra South Senatorial District in the red chamber.

In a heartfelt tribute, Mr Nwoko mourned the loss of his colleague, emphasising both the personal and professional void created by Mr Ubah’s passing.

“Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was more than a fellow legislator; he was a brother and a friend. His death is a profound shock and a tremendous loss, felt deeply by both the Senate and the entire nation. Senator Ubah’s contributions and leadership were critical to the health and progress of Nigerian democracy. His demise is a devastating blow to Nigerian democracy,” he said.

The lawmaker also reflected on the late Ubah’s commitment to public service, noting his role as an exemplary leader and a devoted advocate for his constituents.

Mr Nwoko added, “Senator Ubah was a remarkable leader and a dedicated public servant. He was an intentional lawmaker, tirelessly championing economic empowerment and supporting legislative reforms. He stood out as a dependable source of hope for his constituents. This loss is deeply felt by all of us. The family and the Anambra State Government are in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. His legacy of service and dedication will be remembered with great respect.’’

Mr Okupe said that Nigeria lost a colossus with his demise.

He said, “The curtains have fallen on the golden boy of the South-East. Senator Ifeanyi Uba was the enfant terrible of Anambra politics. He was a quintessential mogul of the Nigerian oil and gas industry and a politician extraordinaire. The South-East has lost an illustrious son, Nigeria has lost a colossus. He was my friend, brother and political associate. May his soul rest in peace.”

Mr Ubah won the Anambra South senatorial seat in the 9th National Assembly on the platform of Young People’s Party, a relatively unpopular party.

He repeated the feat in the 2023 elections.

Mr Ubah officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress recently.
