‘People dying like flies every day,’ lawmaker urges tougher measures to tackle insecurity

Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) has called on the House of Representatives to take stronger measures to address the worsening security situation in the country.
Mr Nwogu, who represents the Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency of Rivers, made the call on Thursday in Abuja at a special plenary on security.
The lawmaker said people die every day in the country, a situation that could be avoided if security matters received proper attention.
He said that, as representatives of the people, the House must rise and speak for victims of insecurity, ensure they get justice, and prevent future recurrence.
“People are dying every day in this world like flies. We read about it in the news, we watch it on television, yet we cannot believe it.
“We only believe it when a man with a long coat comes to our door holding a gun, and then we know we are the next victim.
“Let us not look at it as a soldier dying or a military man; remove the rank, remove the uniform—that is somebody’s father, that is someone’s husband, that is the breadwinner of a home,’’ he said.
Referring to the recent killing of a brigadier general, the legislator pleaded with his colleagues to take the issue of security seriously.
“At the point the general died, somebody lost a father and a husband, so I plead that the issue of security be taken seriously.
“You can imagine what the son or those close to him have passed through watching their father being killed in broad daylight just because they are serving this country.
“It is time to rise; it is time to speak for them and to speak for the people of Nigeria,” the lawmaker said.
