Police disperse thousands of cockroach party protesters with water cannons
Thousands of protesters marched to the state assembly in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand on Monday over corruption in civil service recruitment, calling for reforms in recruitment exams.
The protests over corruption in state recruitment examinations, including paper leaks, which started last month, intensified on Monday as students and the unemployed took to the streets.
Police said they dispersed the protesters with water cannons on Monday as they marched to the state parliament.
The protesters are demanding an investigation of the recruitment, cancellation of some already conducted tests, and complete reform of the state civil service recruitment process.
Monday’s march to the parliament followed weeks of sustained massive “cockroach” protests over exam paper leaks that led to Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on July 25.
