German police are investigating a fire and an explosion overnight at two major hospitals in Berlin, believed to be politically motivated incidents, authorities said.

A police spokeswoman said on Tuesday that a fire was discovered in a building at the Charité University Hospital in central Berlin during the night.

There was also an explosion at a second hospital in the capital’s Neukölln district.

Police suspect that illegal pyrotechnics, such as firecrackers, were used in the blast.

No one was injured in the two incidents.

The investigation was being conducted by the State Security Division, which is responsible for acts committed by political extremists, and by explosives experts.

The administrator of the Neukölln hospital confirmed that damage was caused to the entrance to the radiotherapy department and to a side entrance to the building.

“Window panes and a door were damaged,” a spokesman said.

He said the reception and waiting area were currently unusable, and patients must enter through a side door.

Hospital operations are otherwise running smoothly.
