The police arraigned Isah Umar before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Wuse, Abuja, for allegedly stealing items worth N850,000 from an apartment.

The defendant is facing a one-count charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Chinenye Okafor, told the court that the complainant, Abuh Stephen of Suncity Estate, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Division on August 15.

Mr Okafor alleged that when the complainant’s office and apartment were demolished, the defendant and others at large stole his travelling bags containing clothes and school-leaving certificates.

Other items included an NYSC certificate, a Samsung television, 3 kg and 6 kg gas cylinders, two cooking pots, children’s bags and his wife’s bag, all valued at N850,000.

The offense, she said, contravened Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate, Hafsat Amiru, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

Ms Amiru ordered that the sureties provide utility bills and means of identification and adjourned the matter until September 23 for mention.
