Rwanda Women’s U-19 on Sunday edged their South African counterparts in a rain-hit, 14-over contest at the Nigeria Fifth Women’s Invitational T20I in Lagos.

The tournament is named the Patricia Kambarami Cup, honouring the late ICC Africa Regional Development Manager and Titans COO.

Rwanda won the toss and chose to bat, with both sides entering the match on the back of previous victories.

Openers Gisele Ishimwe and Fanny Utagushimaninde began brightly with early boundaries before Ashley Van Wyk dismissed Ishimwe to check the momentum.

Captain Marie Diane Bimeyinmana fell leg before wicket soon after, leaving Rwanda under early pressure.

Fanny steadied the innings, guiding Rwanda to 38 runs at the end of the six-over power play.

A brief rain delay led to a revised 14-over contest as Rwanda resumed cautiously before accelerating later.

Rwanda posted 101 for seven, with Clarisse Umotoniwase top-scoring with 26 off 21 balls.

Fanny contributed 24, while Uwase Merveille added a quick 17 off 10 balls.

South Africa began steadily before Rwanda claimed three quick wickets to seize control of the chase.

The visitors rallied to 90 for three in 12 overs, with captain Mieke Van Voorst scoring 34 off 27 balls.

Needing 11 from the final over, South Africa faltered, failing to score off the first two deliveries.

Rwanda held firm to restrict South Africa to 100 for four, sealing a dramatic victory.

“I am proud of the team’s composure under pressure,” Rwanda’s coach said after the match.

Alice Ikuzwe was named Player of the Match for her decisive contribution.
