Senegal has nominated Birame Diop, a retired air force general and the country’s current minister of the armed forces, as its candidate for ECOWAS president.
On March 12, UN rights chief Volker Turk urged Mr Faye not to enact the law.
He said Africa remains exposed to unpredictable weather patterns.
“We must be able to partner and build the freedom we believe in – in economic growth, development and other spheres of governance,” the president said.
Mr Tinubu, chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Governments, will join other regional leaders at the event.
Forty-four-year-old Mr Faye, a former tax inspector, pledged to weed out corruption, restore stability, and prioritise economic sovereignty.
