The BEDC official added that the decline in energy supply had also reduced electricity purchases by prepaid customers.
Mr Agbebaku said the decision became necessary amidst public outcry and protests.
The students, who had only two weeks until their first semester examinations, said the situation severely affected their preparation.
Mr Aiyedatiwa said that his government was moving towards energy independence.
A middle-aged man was, in the early hours of Tuesday, electrocuted while trying to vandalise a BEDC transformer on Airport Road in Benin.
“Customers have a role to play by paying for electricity consumed through BEDC accredited billing agents,” he said.
“The current epileptic power supply in the state has crippled economic activities.”
Ms Iyanda said despite the power services, the discos every month still charge crazy bills.
“And that any other agent that comes outside these, we should not attend to them, but they have refused to write us the letter.”
BEDC said it was declaring zero tolerance for assault of its staff in line of duty, and would henceforth prosecute customers found culpable.
