Some social activists in Bauchi have advocated proactive policies and programmes to end child marriage practices.
The West and Central Africa director said violence against women and girls remained widespread, underreported, and a major obstacle to achieving Agenda 2063.
“Early marriage denies girls their childhood and has severe consequences for their health,” Sheri Bastien said.
He called on stakeholders to seek an end to the practice.
“The result of girls not going to school, especially junior secondary, is that they get married, or they’re married off.”
Mr Saheed was remanded by a family court at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin for marrying of his 12-year-old daughter for a laptop.
