“The foundations of the NPT…are cracking due to inattention, intransigence, and ineptitude,” said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.
Despite four weeks of meetings and negotiations, countries were unable to resolve differences and reach a consensus, marking the third consecutive conference to fail to do so.
“Having consulted further with delegations, I understand that this document will not be able to achieve consensus,” said conference president Do Hung Viet on Friday.
“This is not just another review conference. Its success and failure will have implications way beyond these halls and way beyond these next five years,” Mr Viet said.
The NPT RevCon has been held every five years since its entry into force in 1970, except for the 2020 conference, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
