He warned that a return to partisan politics could diminish the statesmanlike reputation and global respect Mr Jonathan currently enjoys.
“This is not a continent waiting for solutions. This is a continent producing them,” he said.
The proposal is a key highlight of the 27th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Assembly of Health Ministers held on Tuesday in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Mr Matthews commended ECOWAS for its engagement in developing a protection of civilians’ policy.
Deputy foreign affairs minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on Tuesday, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to constructive engagement with the ECOWAS court.
They underlined their aim to uphold the protection of human rights in line with their values.
He emphasised that migration drives human trafficking in the region.
The summit will be held from Aug. 25 to 27, in Abuja.
ECOWAS says it is facing integration challenges and seeks to address them by strengthening unity, solidarity, and fraternity within the bloc.
Retired ambassadors have commended ECOWAS for its resilience and notable achievements over the past 50 years despite numerous challenges.
