The Economic Community of West African States on Thursday imposed sanctions against the junta in Guinea and those slowing Mali’s post-coup transition.
Junta boss Lt.-Col. Mamady Doumbouya has requested talks to form a transitional government, media reports from Conakry indicate.
However complicit outside influence may be in the recent turn of events, African leaders must take responsibility.
The regional bloc demanded the immediate restoration of civilian rule in Guinea, adding that the “defense and security forces should maintain a constitutional posture.”
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, leader of the coup that removed President Alpha Conde in Guinea, listed poverty and corruption in government as reasons for the forceful takeover.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday condemned the coup d’etat in Guinea and demanded the immediate release of President Alpha Condé.
