President Bola Tinubu congratulated Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu on Wednesday for her election as the Union for International Cancer Control president.
Also, the WHO coordinator in the state, Salisu Audu, said infection with HPV is implicated in 99 per cent of cervical cancer cases.
He said the week-long programme is targeting girls between the ages of nine and 14, who are said to be vulnerable to cervical cancer.
Mr Bashir said the sensitisation and vaccination of girls against the virus are ongoing and will last three months.
According to the statement, over 16 million girls in Nigeria alone could be protected with the injections by 2025.
