Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal has met behind closed doors with former military heads of state Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar.
“Nigeria has a problem…If they have given you the opportunity, what are you going to do to make sure that Nigerians benefit?”
It is widely believed that Atiku has his eyes on becoming president in 2023.
The former Lagos state governor said Mr Babangida, after the hour long meeting, “gave me his prayers.”
“Yar’Adua and Obasanjo did, and the current regime (of President Muhammadu Buhari) is also doing it even though in a different name.”
Babangida urged Nigerians not to see him as a military dictator, but like a regular human being who has feelings.
“If you say Babangida is a thief, the first thing Nigerians will do is to believe it… They have a shallow thinking all the time.”
He said the next president must be able to hold a conversation with Nigerians on broad issues concerning the nation.
Mr Shonekan who died at the age of 85 in Lagos, was described as a peacemaker who salvaged Nigeria from sinking.
The head of the interim national government, Ernest Shonekan, is dead.
