Mr Rubiales maintained through the trial that Ms Hermoso consented to be kissed amid the celebrations.
Mr Rubiales described the kiss as “an act of affection,” noting that “This was a tremendous moment for her.”
Under Spanish law, a suspect can be detained for up to 72 hours without an arrest warrant.
Hermoso’s legal counsel maintained that the kiss was non-consensual.
Under the ‘Only Yes is Yes’ law, a non-consensual kiss can be considered a sexual assault, resulting in a fine or even a jail sentence if Rubiales is found guilty at trial.
“After the rapid suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of proceedings open against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position.”
According to the TV report, she wants to continue the strike “day and night” until “justice is served.”
The 46-year-old has since refused to step down from his position despite pressure from the public.
We (FIFA) decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level,” the statement said.
“A social assassination is taking place,” the 46-year-old added.
