Kenneth Eze (APC-Ebonyi) has called for a nationwide debate on replacing Nigeria’s current two-term, four-year presidential cycle with a single 16-year tenure.
The group said many Nigerians, particularly youths, had consistently demanded compulsory real-time transmission to reduce human interference in the collation of results.
The group noted that electoral reforms should be treated as a fundamental democratic necessity.
Mr Dare said, “I can assure you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a renowned democrat, will do what is right, but it will not be in isolation of the realities of our country.”
He said it was important to clarify that the Senate did not reject the electronic transmission of results.
ADC has warned that clauses in the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill passed by the Senate could undermine the integrity of elections.
“The conditional language ‘provided if it fails and it becomes impossible to transmit’ introduces troubling discretion in the results management process,” said the CSOs.
The defence chief said the military had been doing everything with its best to ensure that Nigeria was safer for citizens and investors.
“Anything short of this will be out of step with contemporary and progressive electoral practices,” the Nigerian Guild of Editors said.
Arewa 100% Focus has called on the National Assembly to consider the interests of Nigerians and adopt the electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act amendment.
