“No overloading, wearing of life jackets is mandatory, no night travel, no alcohol consumption, and operators must ensure proper weather checks before any journey,” he said.
Mr Makama stated, “The award is a testament of the authority’s dedication and commitment to improving maritime safety in Nigeria and will spur the staff to do more.”
Mr Makama said that NIWA had commenced investigations into the cause of the accidents, in collaboration with sister agencies.
Ms Alake said that the boat accident happened on the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel.
NIWA attributed the fresh accident to negligence, canoe overloading and safety rules violation.
Mr Adeboye recalled that NIWA had been carrying out sensitisation on the importance of wearing life jackets while on boats for the past three years.
Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Sai’du Abdullahi (Bida/Gbako federal constituency), led members to the port on Saturday to engage stakeholders.
According to him, this initiative is expected to guide waterways users and prevent accidents.
