Before the adoption, U.S. acting representative Dorothy Shea called on the international community to bring South Sudan “back from the brink”.
“The stability of the country and a lasting peace for all, including new generations, is at stake,” said a UN official.
UNMISS has stepped up efforts to maintain peace in Malakal town, Upper Nile State, following violence that killed several people last week.
Two-thirds of the people across South Sudan are food insecure, and over nine million people remain dependent on assistance.
The UN says no fewer than 173 civilians have been killed in South Sudan in four months of violence.
A top UN official, Nicholas Haysom, says South Sudan has made history with the appointment of two women to senior leadership positions.
