The minister noted rivers’ important roles in the water cycle, economy, ecosystem, and sustainable development.
The North-Central coordinator of NEMA, Eugene Nyelong, said the initiative was part of the agency’s preparedness against floods as waste usually blocked waterways.
“Environment-friendly habits will help to protect and reduce the risk of flooding in our communities,” he said.
Ms Umar reiterated NEMA’s commitment to reducing the impact of predicted flooding and providing necessary support to affected persons.
She called for more collaboration among stakeholders in sensitising Nigerians to take proactive measures against flooding.
“They will be accommodated at various Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps nearest to them.”
EHCON has urged environmental health officers to enforce public health laws in every local government area to curb flooding nationwide.
Mr Matazu on Wednesday in Abuja also called for stakeholders’ collaboration to prevent disasters caused by flooding across the country.
