Civil defence operatives in Akwa Ibom apprehended eight suspects and impounded trucks containing 315,000 litres of suspected adulterated diesel.
The suspects were conveying kerosene suspected to have been illegally refined, in polythene bags, the NSCDC said.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ilorin has warned filling stations to desist from hoarding petrol.
The suspects were said to have called phone numbers of people at random and compelled them to send money.
The boats were laden with 16,000 litres of illegally-refined petrol and another 12,500 litres of petrol mixed with water and 370 bags of fish.
The first suspect was arrested for breaking into the cashier’s office of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) in Katsina.
The NSCDC recently trained 100 private security guards in intelligence gathering, disaster management and first aid treatment.
The NSCDC said the police was lying, insisting that a group of bandits overpowered the joint security team in Zamfara.
