Mr Guterres started his remarks by welcoming the ceasefire agreement reached by Israel and Hamas.
The groups also kidnapped around 240 people and took them to Gaza.
The head of Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial has criticised UN secretary general António Guterres for his remarks on the Gaza war.
The UN secretary general said the Middle East was on the “verge of the abyss” as he urged Islamist Hamas to release the hostages it took immediately.
“I appeal to all parties – and those who have an influence over those parties – to avoid any further escalation and spillover,” he said.

Africa has experienced seven coups since August 2020, before the one on Wednesday in Gabon. Others are Niger, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and Chad.
