“The UN Security Council’s recent resolution to support African-led peace operations is an important step,” Mr Guterres said.
Mr Geng said this during a UN Security Council briefing on the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
UNAMI is a special political mission established in 2003 by UN Security Council Resolution 1500, at the request of the Iraqi government.
The UN General Assembly recognised Palestine as an observer state in 2012 in spite of resistance from the United States.
In a vote of 12 in favour, one against, and two abstentions, the council did not adopt a draft resolution recommending a General Assembly vote on UN membership for Palestine.
