The executive vice-chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, has urged Nigerians to understand their data rights to avoid exploitation.
NIEEE president, Felix Adegboye, stated this at a hybrid national technical discourse, organised to commemorate Data Privacy Day 2026.
The government, through the FCCPC, recently imposed a $220 million fine on Meta for data breaches.
Mr Olatunji emphasised that data protection requires the implementation of laws and cross-border cooperation among countries.
According to Mr Tijani, a strong digital economy relies on skilled individuals and trust.
He called on young innovators to continue on the path of constructive innovation.
NDPC national commissioner Vincent Olatunji said this when data protection experts from Somalia visited Abuja.
The NDPC national commissioner said that of the country’s 10,000 skilled data protection professionals, less than 5,000 are certified.
Mr Olatunji added that certifying data protection professionals in the country would reduce capital flight and create over 500,000 jobs in the sector.
Mr Olatunji noted that those found culpable for violating the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, would be brought to justice.
