In June, the German diplomat was declared persona non grata by Sudan’s foreign ministry and effectively barred from the country.
The UN, AU and IGAD issued a statement appealing to the sides “to create necessary conditions during this period for the civilians to seek safe shelter, food and medical care.”
At least 185 people have been killed and 1,800 injured in the fighting, UN mediator Volker Perthes said on Monday.
UN secretary general Antonio Guterres has condemned the violence from the power struggle between two generals in Sudan.
The coup ended a power-sharing agreement between military and civilian leaders, established following the April 2019 overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled for 30 years.
“We want to act quickly,” Mr Perthes said while expressing optimism that the talks will be like confidence-building measures that will help reduce violence.
The UN says “The lack of trust among Sudanese actors needs to be overcome through a meaningful and inclusive dialogue.”
Pro-democracy demonstrations have been held across the country’s capital, Khartoum, since the army dissolved the transitional government.
