UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, has launched a $400 million appeal for 2026 as his office continues to operate “in survival mode”.
The UN rights chief said he was “astounded by the now-routine abuse and denigration of migrants and refugees.”
The U.S. action made “all states less safe around the world”, Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the high commissioner, said.

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has made a public broadcast saying he fled the country to avoid being assassinated.
He said human rights, democracy and rule of law were interdependent and mutually reinforcing.
More than 20 people have been killed since the demonstrations began on September 25.
Mr Rajoelina, who has been under pressure to resign amid protests rocking the country for weeks, condemned “in the strongest possible terms” moves to oust him from office.
President Andry Rajoelina has requested a one-year extension to address power and water shortages, promising to resign if the problems persist.
Footage of a bonfire and police teargassing protesters demanding the resignation of Mr Rajoelina circulated on social media.
