The World Health Organisation says three people have died in a suspected hantavirus infection outbreak on a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean.

In a statement shared on its official X page on Sunday, the WHO said one case has been laboratory confirmed, while five additional cases remain under investigation. 

“Of the six affected individuals, three have died, and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa,” the organisation said.

WHO said investigations are still ongoing to confirm the source of the outbreak, with laboratory testing and virus sequencing.

“Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing,” it said.

According to the WHO, hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure, particularly contact with the urine or faeces of infected rodents. 

While rare, the disease can, in some cases, spread between humans and may lead to severe respiratory complications, requiring close monitoring and urgent medical intervention.

In 2024, the health agency explained that hantaviruses can lead to two major conditions, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, more common in the Americas, and haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, found largely in Europe and Asia. 

The WHO director-general, Tedros Ghebreyesus, said the organisation is working closely with member states and the ship’s operators to contain the situation.

Mr Ghebreyesus disclosed that efforts are underway to evacuate two symptomatic passengers for further treatment, while a comprehensive public health risk assessment is being conducted for those still onboard.

“Rapid, coordinated action is critical to contain risks and protect public health,” he said.

WHO added that it has notified its National Focal Points in line with the International Health Regulations, noting that a Disease Outbreak News update will be issued.
