Three men arraigned over alleged cultism in Lagos
Three men, Segun Ahmed, Adegbite Afeez, and Kazeem Babatunde, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on charges of allegedly belonging to an unlawful society.
The defendants, Mr Ahmed, 38; Mr Afeez, 33; and Mr Babatunde, 43, were arraigned before Magistrate Lateef Owolabi on two counts bordering on conspiracy and membership of an unlawful society.
The prosecutor, Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendants and others still at large committed the offences on August 8, at about 10.30 a.m., at Salami Bashorun Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendants belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, a group proscribed by law as an unlawful society.
She said the offences contravened Section 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d) of the Unlawful Societies Prohibition and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021, and Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Mr Owolabi granted each defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until October 16 for further proceedings.
