This investigation was launched after Gavin Guffey, a 17-year-old from Rock Hill, died by suicide in July 2022 after being victimised by Lawal’s scheme.
“This defendant made it his full-time job to defraud the U.S. for years before the pandemic,” said a U.S. attorney.
The order comes after the police denied arresting Mr Rimingado, saying the force only invited him to address a petition against him.
The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge.
