Three hundred and seventy-six Nigerian students trapped in war-torn Sudan have arrived in Abuja.
The 31st course participants, on a visit to the country engaged in various activities, including visits to military installations.
An amateur footage making the rounds online showed some stranded Igbo students with their luggages, accusing the federal government of discrimination in the evacuation process.
The government said it has already convened a Situation Room to monitor the evacuation exercise.
“Nigeria ranks fourth among African countries with large numbers of diasporans outside the continent…the extra-continental Nigerian diaspora has tripled in two decades.”
“The last one we gave them, we evacuated people, we gave them $100. So, it depends on the budget they have.”
According to the NIDCOM chief, over three million Nigerians reside in Sudan, and efforts are being made to evacuate as many as possible.
Countries like Mexico, Thailand, Tunisia, and Türkiye may soon need more foreign workers because their population is no longer growing.
“We are currently making plans to evacuate all stranded Nigerian citizens via air transport through the identified safe transit areas back home,“ the statement said.
