Governor Charles Soludo, on August 6, appointed Mr Omenugha as the substantive vice-chancellor of the university.
He pointed out that the salary of a professor in a Nigerian university is approximately N500,000, excluding deductions, which reduces it to about N300,000 after deductions are made.
A UK-based tech expert, Gabriel Iruaga, has called for the inclusion of technological education in Nigeria’s school curriculum.
The ASUU FUGUS protest, held peacefully within the university premises, sent a strong message urging the government to respect the 2009 pact or risk industrial action.
“Professors in Nigeria earn less than $300 monthly. Our union will continue to fight for dignity within the system,” Mr Yusuf-Ahmed said.
The chairman also described the scheme as a “poisoned chalice” and urged members to stay away from it.
Mr Omenyi said ASUU remained committed to quality education and the defence of university autonomy.
The commissioner said the government would recruit another set of 4,000 teachers after their deployment to fill any existing vacancies in the schools.
Mr Eze said Nigerians should hold the government responsible in case of any nationwide indefinite strike by ASUU, as the government had failed to do the needful.
Mr Mogaji said the federal government was treating critical issues affecting higher education recklessly.
