132 people killed, 655 injured in Ogun road crashes in 2024: TRACE

The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said 132 people died while 655 others sustained injuries in various road accidents across the state in 2024.
A spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this in a statement in Abeokuta on Friday.
Mr Akinbiyi explained that 91 men, 29 women, seven male children, and five female children died in the accidents.
He added that 408 men, 209 women, 31 male children, and seven female children sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said that 43 pedestrians, 114 buses, 89 motorcycles, 223 trucks, 87 tankers, and 179 tankers were involved in the accidents.
“The above statistics were as informed on the area coverage by TRACE as assisted by Nigerian police only. This was as submitted to the appropriate safety agencies for total collection,” he said.
Mr Akinbiyi added that in 2024, total fatal accidents accounted for 16 per cent, while serious accidents shared the larger percentage of 79 per cent, and five per cent was for minor accidents.
“Commercial vehicles remained the most involved in road traffic crashes with 73 per cent while private vehicles shared the smaller chunk of 27 per cent,” he said.
The TRACE spokesperson explained that the major causes of road traffic crashes remained speeding at 45 per cent, mechanical fault at 19 per cent, and reckless driving at 14 per cent.
“Also, driving in a direction prohibited by the road traffic law: 11 per cent, tyre burst: four per cent, road rage: three per cent, poor weather: one per cent, fatigue: one per cent, brake failure: 1 per cent and failed portion of the road: one per cent,” he said.
Mr Akinbiyi explained that there was a significant reduction in
death, injuries, and cases of road traffic crashes across the state compared to 2023.
He said that road traffic deaths decreased by 31.25 per cent in 2024, while the number of persons injured also reduced by 29.49 per cent and the total number of crashes by 41.11 per cent.
He explained that one of the ways to reduce crashes was to increase TRACE’s workforce to enhance effective productivity.
Mr Akinbiyi also listed the provision of patrol vehicles along the major 18 corridors and metropolises for constant monitoring patrol to reduce carnage.
“Provision of adequate mandatory warning signs and prohibition signs along the 18 major traffic corridors in the state is also important,” he said.
