2021 Oscars to hold on-site, will include COVID-19 testing
The 2021 Oscars will be held on-site without an option for attendees to participate via videoconference.
The 93rd Academy Awards are due to take place on April 25 in Los Angeles.
Proceedings will be at the Dolby Theatre, the ceremony’s normal home, and Los Angeles’ main railway hub, Union Station, after a 90-minute preshow ceremony.
The show’s producers said in a letter that they had gone to “great lengths to provide a safe and enjoyable evening for all of you in person,” announcing that they will not be allowed to participate remotely.
The event will include on-site COVID-19 safety teams with testing capability.
The letter, released by U.S. showbiz site Deadline, was written by producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins.
The ceremony stands apart from other award shows this season, such as the Golden Globes and the Grammys, where winners accepted their awards virtually as part of COVID-19 safety measures.
Only the nominees, their guests, and the show’s presenters are required to be present at Los Angeles’ Union Station, where the awards will be held.
Casual wear has been discouraged for the ceremony, and attendees advised to wear something that is “a fusion of inspirational and aspirational.”
This year, 70 women received 76 nominations, setting a record for a given year. Notably, Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao were nominated in the same year’s directing category for the first time.
