2026 World Cup: Mexico beat South Korea, qualify for second round of 32

Co-hosts Mexico have become the first team to book their spot in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan.
A goal by Luis Romo in the 50th minute was enough to secure the maximum points, topping Group A with six points, three points ahead of their opponent, who sit in second place with three points.
Speaking on their victory, during the post-match conference, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said, “Today we learned from our mistakes. We weren’t spectacular, but we played a good match. That speaks to the team’s maturity. We were much more patient.”
Meanwhile, South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo said, “The goal we conceded was regrettable, but there is no need to hang our heads. The result is disappointing, but I believe the players executed the plans we prepared for this game well.”
South Korea will play South Africa in their final group match on Wednesday in Estadio Azteca, while Czechia will lock horns with South Africa at the Estadio BBVA.
