The slated national summit organised by opposition political party leaders is underway in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The summit, currently taking place today, Saturday, at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government, is themed “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy”.

Present at the summit are key members of the opposition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi; former Senate President David Mark; former Governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso; former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, among others.

Some of the political parties present at the summit include the People’s Redemption Party, Labour Party, Accord Party, All Progressives Movement (APM), Youth Party (YP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), among others.

Each of the participating parties is expected to deliver brief statements at the summit.

Speakers such as the former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu; former resident electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini; and security and intelligence expert, Kabir Adamu, would be addressing participants on the subject of unity and the imperative of democratic institutions at the summit.

Earlier, the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to disrupt the scheduled summit.

“We have uncovered plans by the ruling APC to disrupt the summit being held by the opposition parties in Ibadan, Oyo State, today, 25th of April,” Mr Abdullahi stated.

“They say they are not scared, but they are behaving like people who are terrified. But we will not be deterred, because we are on the side of the Nigerian people,” he said.
