2027: NDC zones presidential ticket to South for one term

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election will emerge from Southern Nigeria.
The decision was announced on Saturday during the party’s national convention held at the Los Angeles Event Centre, Ahmadu Bello Way, Abuja.
The party said the South would retain the presidency for a single four-year term before the ticket rotates to the North in 2031.
“On the principles of power sharing and the rotational arrangement of the highest office in the land between the northern and southern parts of the country,” the party stated during the convention.
“Therefore, be it resolved by this convention mandating southern zoning in 2027 that the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) hereby zones its presidential ticket for the 2027 presidential elections to Southern Nigeria for a single term of four years ending in 2031,” it said.
The party further stated that the presidential ticket would automatically rotate to Northern Nigeria after the expiration of the four-year term.
The development comes shortly after former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, said his new political party had yet to zone its presidential ticket to any region.
Mr Kwankwaso had said the party would decide whether he would emerge as its presidential candidate or become running mate to Peter Obi in the 2027 election.
