The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 general election.

“Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers,” Mr Obi said during a conversation with his supporters, the “Obidient Movement,” on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

He also appealed to Nigerians for support and prayers ahead of the polls.

Mr Obi said his decision to contest the presidency again was driven by his commitment to building a better-governed Nigeria founded on competence, accountability, and inclusive development.

The former Anambra governor made it clear that his ambition is solely for the presidency, firmly ruling out serving as a running mate to any candidate.

“I am not travelling around the world to learn governance to be vice-president,” he said. “I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting president.”

Mr Obi, after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party, became the LP’s candidate—contesting alongside President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—pulling huge crowds at campaign rallies and making history by winning Mr Tinubu’s Lagos and some northern states.

His candidacy in 2023 disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party dominance, attracting widespread support from young voters and urban populations nationwide.

Meanwhile, Mr Abubakar had also vowed to contest the presidency in 2027.
