2028 Olympics: Super Falcons defeat Comoros 2-0 in first leg

The Nigerian team finally opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a tap-in by Michelle Alozie.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons, on Friday, defeated Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of the second-round African qualification match for the football event of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.

The first-leg tie, played at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ogun State, witnessed a barren first half, with the ten-time African champions, led by interim coach Austin Eguavoen, failing to convert their opportunities.

In the second half, the Nigerian team finally opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a tap-in by Michelle Alozie, while Uchenna Kanu added the second goal with a header in the 60th minute.

The match also witnessed Falconets captain Joy Igbokwe make her Super Falcons debut.

Friday’s first-leg match was a home fixture for Comoros because the country does not have a CAF-approved venue for the tie. The second leg will be played at the same stadium on October 13.

The winner of the two-legged tie will face Morocco in the next stage of the qualification series after the Republic of the Congo withdrew from the competition.

Nigeria advanced directly to the second round without playing in the opening round, while Comoros reached this stage after defeating Sudan 17-0 in the first match and 13-0 in the second, securing a 30-0 win on aggregate.

The Super Falcons are seeking a return to the Olympics after appearing at Paris 2024, ending their 16-year absence from the competition.

Only two teams from Africa are guaranteed spots in the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympics.
